Welcome to the initial launch of the Fone Fan site. It is our mission to provide easy to understand, accurate and timely updates, concepts and news as it pertains to mobile devices and applications.
Let’s get the obvious out of the way right at the start. Yes we know that the word ‘Phone’ is not spelled correctly. In our efforts to be different we felt Fone is more Fun and Fits with the Fanatic side of our mission.
You may or may not know that apparently 2012 is supposed to be a magical year. This is not due to the Mayan calendar event signalling the end of the world (rumor has it that a new calendar has been unearthed and we still have time) but rather to the convergence of adoption of mobile technology and synergistic capabilties.
The first item that we have heard is that by the end of 2012 mobile Fone manufactures will no longer make what we refer to as Feature Fones. The are the typical Flip Fones that we all carried before the creation of the smart Fone. This actually has several interesting ripples for the market place.
- What if you don’t want a smart phone (you don’t like playing Angry Birds)
- Many smart Fones have the requirement of a data plan (you don’t need it)
- You do not want the increased complexity of running a smart Fone. (you just want to place a call and talk to real people)
We believe that you, the true power behind products, will demand that there is an option to have a Fone only version. Now, we also believe the manufacturers will still force it to be a smart Fone but it will have software that limits the use to phone calls, maybe some text, etc. to match the now disappearing Flip Fones. The interface will be made to be extremely simple and will fire up the moment you activate the Fone. Naturally there will most likely be an upgrade option that will cost and will then just revert the Fone to it originally intended state.
The second thing we have heard that will occur in 2012 is that all Fones manufactured by the end of the year will contain Near Field Communications (NFC) technology. If you have not heard about this as of yet, it is the ability for the Fone to pick up on short length radio signals. For example: the Samsung Nexus S has built into it the ability to be used as a payment channel for enabled NFC payment stations.
